The Argument Against Rest

Rest, or the Argument Against It

(In Certain Circumstances)

The past few weeks have been BUSY at our house.

This past Sunday, I very much wanted to lie down and do nothing, but that’s not really an option with 2 small boys – 2 and 4 years old.

On top of these little people needing and wanting my attention, I kept hearing the many tasks around the house calling to me, “Becca, you need to fold this laundry,” and “You really should organize the kids’ fall clothes.” UGH. At some point, I said to Doug, “We have to get out of here or I’m gonna lose it.”

So, we left the house.

If you have small children, you know this can be easier said than done.

We went to the park. And while I was there, out in nature and in the fresh air, something dawned on me. Getting out of the house, away from the place where I want to rest, but have a million other things to do, was cleansing. I let out a big sigh of relief. I could just watch and enjoy my boys, no multitasking the laundry.

I was PRESENT in a way that I struggle deeply to be at home. And it was so nice.

I was very tired, but getting out of the house awakened and renewed me in an unexpected way. On top of that, the movement and exercise the boys got meant calm(er) bedtimes and LOTS of cozy time afterwards to read. To REST! Ahh. Big sigh.
