Tell us about the work you do outside of teaching group yoga classes?

Outside of teaching group yoga classes, I am a full-time private yoga teacher.

What makes private yoga different from a group yoga class?

Many people think private yoga is a group class, but with more corrections, assists and time to ask questions. NOPE!

I try to find the most potent movement practice I possibly can to bring you to your goals, whether that is to reduce your stress, recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or deepening your practice.  The more we work together, the more powerful your practice will become
— Mary

In a private session, I am curating a yoga practice that is specifically tailored to your unique body, preferences and goals. I try to find the most potent movement practice I possibly can to bring you to your goals, whether that is to reduce your stress, recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or deepening your practice.  The more we work together, the more powerful your practice will become as we figure out what movements are helpful, and what movements are not. You get to ask as many questions as you want, and I will ask you a lot of questions to figure out what works best for you.

Private lessons are not confined to a specific style of yoga, and it's often the case that I am incorporating many different styles of yoga within each session, and borrowing from other movement modalities, including Pilates, myofascial release and strength training.  It's a completely bespoke experience, and really, really fun!

What draws you to work with birthing people?

Birthing people need support, and yoga can offer so much support.  At the same time, I didn't have anyone guiding me in yoga practice postpartum, and I ended up with pelvic pain that took many, many months to heal.  I want to guide birthing folks toward a yoga practice that supports them, instead of causing more harm.

Private yoga in particular can offer tremendous support for specific issues related to pregnancy and postpartum.  Issues like pelvic floor dysfunction and diastasis recti are complex, and the healing process will vary greatly depending on the student.  Many of my students have had better results in healing pelvic pain, diastasis recti and pelvic floor dysfunction when we work together 1-1.

What brings you joy in your work?

I love helping people find a yoga practice that truly lights them up, and really encourages them to get on their mat week to week.  It's especially joyful when it's student who thought they didn't like yoga or thought yoga wasn't for them.

What do you find challenging about your work?

Sometimes the combination of injuries or symptoms can be a challenge. For instance, I have a student who likes the feeling of a flow, but can't bear weight on her wrists or knees, and has a history of cervical issues and shoulder problems.  That was tricky!  But we figured it out, and that student has been seeing me for over two years now because together, we have created a yoga practice that she always looks forward to.  That being said, it's always a fun challenge for me!
